Behind the scenes with David Mackey of Mackeymedia filming Claudette Dean performing Resurrection

Unity consciousness is a state of enlightenment where we pierce the mask of illusion which creates separation and fragmentation. Behind the appearance of separation is one unified field of wholeness. Here, the seer and the scenery are one." ♥ -Deepak Chopra

I thought ending 2012 with a post on Unity Consciousness would be most appropriate on many levels.

My latest project “Resurrection", a performance art video, is my attempt at conveying this message of Unity Consciousness in a very personal and direct way; it is also a turning point for me as an artist.  Up until this point my work has been a task of self-discovery and as such has involved a reaching inward, with Resurrection I am reaching outward and taking a first step away from the safety of the private altar that I have been worshipping at these many years as an artist.

Back in early summer of this year my friend and fellow artist, Susan Moir Mackey, asked me to participate in a project that she was spearheading called “Boundaries”. A much simplified explanation of the project would be that Susan invited a group of people to come together to explore the concept of boundaries and express our discoveries in any way that we would like to.

As I thought about it the idea of using veils to represent boundaries came to the forefront and before I knew it I had come up with a performance art piece.  I tried to find a way of executing my idea without actually having to perform it but there was just no getting around it.

On the day we were set to meet, I practiced all day so that I would get all of my lines in order.  I had absolutely no emotional reaction while performing it in front of the mirror.

I showed up at the designated location and announced that I would be doing a performance art piece and that I should do it before anything else occurred.

It came as a total surprise to me that while performing the piece before a group of 6, I had a very powerful reaction.  My chest got very tight and I knew it was an energy build up around my heart chakra.  I had to actually lie down afterwards and I had a release of energy for at least 2 days after that.  The viewers were also very moved by the performance.   Such is the healing and transformative power of art!

Perhaps 2 weeks later I received an invitation to participate in an exhibition at the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas and the theme was Kingdom Come.  It didn’t take me long to realize that I would have to produce a performance art video of the performance I had given at Boundaries.

Thus Resurrection came into being with the help of my friend David Mackey of Mackeymedia who directed and produced the video.  A collaborative effort all around!  While performing it in front of Dave I had another emotional reaction and since then I seem to have an emotional reaction whenever I am watching someone else watch the video.

I don’t know where my art is headed but I know one thing for sure -  my message of Unity Consciousness will remain at the forefront and all signs point to a further use of word.

Stay tuned!
